The Story of American Legion Post 833
“Is To Provide Support For Veterans, Active Duty Military, and Their Families”
Our History & Background
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919. The Department of New York was chartered on May 24, 1919, with rapid growth throughout the state and District 10 in Suffolk County forming posts as early as 1919. As Long Island and Suffolk County grew, a need developed for additional post locations.
In time, Smithtown grew to a point where it was determined a new post was needed. 22 veterans signed up to become charter members, and on January 23, 1920, the James Ely Miller Post 833 was officially issued a charter by the National Headquarters.
Post 833 is proudly named in honor of Capt. James Ely Miller, the first American aviator killed in combat in France during World War I.
Veterans Services & Support
VA Benefits Assistance
Our Corps of Service Officers assist veterans and their families in applying for benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They undergo regular training to stay updated on changing VA policies and procedures.
Emergency Financial Help
We provide emergency financial assistance to veterans and active-duty military, focusing particularly on those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by helping cover past-due rent, mortgage, utilities, and essential repairs.
Medical & Community Care
Post members regularly volunteer at the Northport VA Medical Center, support the Beacon House for homeless veterans, and provide a Post Honor Guard for funerals and public events.
Community Services & Partnerships
At its inception, Post 833 became an active partner with the Town of Smithtown and its community members. Each year, alongside VFW Post 10870, we organize and present formal programs for Veterans Day and Memorial Day, featuring local civic, county, and state leaders, as well as musicians and vocalists to honor our nation’s heroes.
Displayed at the Plaza is a monument dedicated “To the Men and Women Veterans of Smithtown Past, Present, and Future Who Distinguished Themselves By Their Honorable Service to Their Country,” complete with a Veterans Walk of Honor.
The Sons of The American Legion (S.A.L.)
Created in 1932, the S.A.L. is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion, supporting our ongoing mission of service.
